چکیده

RAGAN, H. A., S. NACHT, G. R. LEE, C. R. BISHOP, AND G. E. CARTWRIGHT. Effect of ceruloplasmin on plasma iron in copper-deficient swine. Am. J. Physiol. 217(5) : 1320-1323. 1969.-The administration of homologous ceruloplasmin to copper-deficient swine with adequate iron stores resulted in a rapid, marked, and sustained increase in plasma iron concentration. An amount of inorganic copper equivalent to that contained in the ceruloplasmin produced only a minimal, transient increase in plasma iron. Ferrokinetic studies following ceruloplasmin infusion indicated that the increase in serum iron resulted from an increase in the rate of flow of iron into plasma. These studies support the hypothesis that ceruloplasmin, possibly because of its ferroxidase activity, directly affects the transfer of iron from cells to plasma.

The role of ceruloplasmin in iron metabolism.

The importance of ceruloplasmin in iron metabolism was studied in swine made hypoceruloplasminemic by copper deprivation. When the plasma ceruloplasmin level fell below 1% of normal, cell-to-plasma iron flow became sufficiently impaired to cause hypoferremia, even though total body iron stores were normal. When ceruloplasmin was administered to such animals, plasma iron increased immediately an...

Iron metabolism in copper-deficient swine.

The way in which iron is handled by the duodenal mucosa, the reticuloendothelial system, the hepatic parenchymal cell, and the normoblast was investigated in copper-deficient swine.Copper-deficient swine failed to absorb dietary iron at the normal rate. Increased amounts of stainable iron were observed in fixed sections of duodenum from such animals. When (59)iron was administered orally, the m...

Copper deficiency increases iron absorption in the rat.

Release of iron from enterocytes and hepatocytes is thought to require the copper-dependent ferroxidase activity of hephaestin (Hp) and ceruloplasmin (Cp), respectively. In swine, copper deficiency (CD) impairs iron absorption, but whether this occurs in rats is unclear. By feeding a diet deficient in copper, CD was produced, as evidenced by the loss of copper-dependent plasma ferroxidase I act...

Studies with 67Cu were carried out for the most part after the rats...

STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF RESIDUAL CHLORINE ON SERUM IRON AND RELATED PARAMETERS

The major purpose of the present investigation was to study the effects of different concentrations of residual chlorine on serum iron related parameters in rats. Feeding male rats with water containing 80 ppm of residual chlorine daily for 5 days reduced serum levels of ceruloplasmin, copper, iron and hemoglobin by approximately 27%,23%,6% and 4%, respectively. Higher reductions in serum ...
